Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7 – what has changed and when you will notice
The difference between Wi-Fi 5, 6, 6E and 7, what the 6 GHz band, 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation bring, and why network speed is set by the weakest device and your internet connection.
The short version
- Wi-Fi 6 mainly improves efficiency with many devices (OFDMA, MU-MIMO). Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band.
- Wi-Fi 7 brings 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band, 4K-QAM and Multi-Link Operation – using several bands at once.
- A new generation only helps if both the router and the device support it. It will not change your internet speed or your router.
Generations according to the Wi-Fi Alliance
The Wi-Fi Alliance labels generations with numbers. According to its overview:
| Generation | Introduced | Bands | Main new features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 5 | 2014 | 5 GHz (devices mostly dual-band) | higher capacity, multi-gigabit speeds |
| Wi-Fi 6 | 2018 | 2.4 and 5 GHz | OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 160 MHz channels, 1024-QAM, Target Wake Time |
| Wi-Fi 6E | as part of Wi-Fi 6 | + 6 GHz | Wi-Fi 6 in the 6 GHz band |
| Wi-Fi 7 | 2024 | 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz | 320 MHz channels in 6 GHz, Multi-Link Operation, 4K-QAM (20 % higher transmission rates than 1024-QAM) |
For Wi-Fi 7, the Wi-Fi Alliance states that 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band offer double the throughput of Wi-Fi 6.
The 6 GHz band in Europe
In the EU, part of the 6 GHz band is harmonised for Wi-Fi: 5945–6425 MHz (Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/1067). That is less than is used in some other countries, so fewer wide channels fit at once in the EU.
Higher frequencies pass through walls less well. The 6 GHz band is therefore excellent in the same room or through one wall, but covering a whole flat or house will often need a system with several access points.
When you will notice the difference
- Lots of devices on the network – Wi-Fi 6 and later share airtime between devices better.
- Crowded surroundings (a block of flats, an office) – the 6 GHz band is still less congested.
- Large transfers within your home network – copying to a NAS, backups.
When you will not notice it: if your internet connection is slow. A Wi-Fi 7 router will not speed up a 100 Mb/s line from your provider.
Both ends must speak the same language
A Wi-Fi 6 laptop connected to a Wi-Fi 7 router will communicate as Wi-Fi 6. You only get the benefits of a new generation when both the router and the device support it. You can find the generation in the device’s specification or in the network settings (Windows shows “Protocol: Wi-Fi 6” and so on).
Cable still makes sense
An Ethernet cable is more stable and does not drop out due to interference. A desktop PC, TV, games console or NAS that stays in one place – connect them by cable if you can.
Before you finish
Ticks are just for you on screen. Nothing is saved; a reload clears them.
