Repair
Most “slow” and noisy computers are clogged with dust. Start there. If that is not enough, decide whether to repair, upgrade or replace.
Before you start: Shut the computer down and unplug it. On a laptop, disconnect the battery as the manual says. Never put a vacuum cleaner on the components.
The procedure
-
Shut down and unplug
Turn the computer off and pull the plug. On a laptop, disconnect the battery if the manual allows it.
-
Clean the filters and fans
Dust filters usually sit at the front, the bottom and under the PSU. When using compressed air, hold the fan still and keep the can upright.
-
Check the airflow direction
Arrows on the fan frame show the spin and airflow direction. Air should move through the case one way.
-
Decide: repair, upgrade, replace
Machine clean and still not enough? Go through the decision flow below. Count operating-system support in as well.

-
Know your rights
A defect under warranty: you can ask the seller for repair or replacement. Out of warranty, ask for a quote first.
-
Hand the old one in properly
Not in household waste. Take it back to a seller or a collection point. Wipe or destroy drives with personal data first.
Upgrade or replace?
Answer a few questions about the old machine. You get a plan: what to do now, what to consider, and when replacing it makes more sense.
